A troika who create richly atmospheric soundtracks for imaginary films, Brussels/Antwerp-based outfit Dans Dans can summon up any sonic landscape of their choosing. Comprising Bert Dockx, frontman of revered Belgian collective Flying Horseman, alongside Frederic Jacques (bassist for Mark Lanegan) and highly accomplished instrumentalist Steven Cassiers, Dans Dans were initially fêted for their imaginative covers. Moving beyond these influences (David Bowie, Ennio Morricone, Nick Drake, Ornette Coleman), the band’s most recent album ‘Sand’ saw the trio introduce their own compositions.
Recorded in real time over a mere four days with no overdubbing, ‘Sand’ sees Dans Dans veer from lethargic and pensive to driving and exhilarating, on to melancholy and downbeat sometimes within the space of a single track. Intuitive and hypnotic, but never predictable or pretentious.
